Do you Know Your Auto Limits?

Dave Buskey here with your McEvoy minute.

Last year was an interesting year. We had a few clients that had mishaps and I would say either slipped on the ice or had animal run in front of them and they went off the road and they actually took out a telephone pole and once I got the bills they were shocked.

We have a bill right here of one of our clients that had a mishap and between replacing the pole and the work that Verizon did, it came to over $27,000 that was paid out.

This comes under your property damage liability limits on your policy.  Interesting thing about this is the New York state minimum limit is $10,000. So You take out a $27,000 pole,  you have $10,000 a coverage who pays for the difference.  Yep, it comes out of your pocket.

So an important thing to do is to make sure you look at your property damage liability limits because you can increase that coverage from 10 to 50000, and it will cost about $7.  It will range between companies or you can increase it to $100,000 and it might be additional $20 or so . Call your agent to see what you've got for property damage liability limits.  You know, it doesn't take too much to swerve a car a little bit on the ice patch and you take out a telephone pole and National Grid and Verizon are going to be looking at you to pay them.  And if you don't have enough coverage on your policy, then is going to come out of your pocket.
